sukabumiNews.net, SUKABUMI REGENCY – The condition of the Gunung Batu Public Elementary School (SDN) in Kebonpedes District, Sukabumi Regency, is extremely concerning. It has not been repaired for 30 years.
The roof is collapsing, and the ceiling is rotting
with age. The walls are dull, and the desks and chairs have been moved because
the classrooms are no longer in use. All that remains is debris from the fallen
roof.
Gunung Batu Elementary School Principal Ami Kusmaeni
stated that the three damaged classrooms were grades 4, 5, and 6. The damage
began in February 2024.
"It's been almost a year and a half since the damage
began, but initially, two classrooms were still usable. Starting in February
2024, they began to collapse, and ultimately, they couldn't be used," Ami
Kusmaeni told SukabumiNews on Friday (August 8, 2025).
Since then, he continued, the students have had to
evacuate to a safer location for teaching and learning activities (KBM). They
now study in the library and prayer room.
"At that time, the children studied outside in
the front room because it wasn't too bad. After the damage was really severe,
we used the library and prayer room. The prayer room is usually used for
communal Dhuha prayers, but now Dhuha prayers have been moved to the
field," he explained.
SukabumiNews' observations at the school revealed that
the students were indeed studying in a cramped space with limited ventilation.
This is despite the large number of students.
"Even though the room is simple and cramped, with
limited ventilation, thank God, they show an extraordinary enthusiasm for
learning," he said.
Requests for Assistance Have Been Requested Many Times, Still Unrealized, Citing Budget Changes
Ami stated that the school has repeatedly attempted to
request assistance from the Sukabumi Regency Education Office. However, until
now, the aid has not been realized due to budget changes.
Ami even said that the sub-district, the Regional
Technical Implementation Unit (UPTD), and the Sukabumi Regency Education Office
(Disdik) have already inspected the location to make it more accessible.
"They said it would be realized this year, but it hasn't happened yet. The
problem is that they're waiting for the revised budget," Ami explained.
Gunung Batu Elementary School Has Not Been Repaired for 30 Years
Met separately, the Village Head of Kebonpedes, Dadan
Apriandani, stated that the school building is 30 years old. In addition to the
three damaged classrooms, the overall condition of the school is quite
alarming, requiring revitalization.
"The worst are three classrooms. It's been 30
years and there haven't been any repairs. The rest really need repairs
too," Dadan said.
According to Dadan, the Kebonpedes Village Government
has also attempted to coordinate with the Sukabumi Regency Education Office to
submit a revitalization plan regarding the condition of the Gunung Batu
Elementary School building.
