sukabumiNews.net, NATUNA – Residents of Natuna, particularly those in East Bunguran District, are urging the Indonesian Ministry of Maritime Affairs and Fisheries (KKP) to immediately implement the Ranai Fish Market development. The project, initiated almost six years ago, has yet to show significant progress despite the region's vast fisheries potential.
Zulkarnaen, Deputy
Chair of the Cerdik Pandai Muda Melayu Kepulauan Riau Islands Non-Governmental
Organization (LSM Cindai Kepri), stated that the slow pace of project
implementation is a major obstacle to the development of the local fishing industry.
"The Ministry of
Maritime Affairs and Fisheries must implement this project as soon as possible.
The Integrated Maritime Affairs and Fisheries Center (SKPT) in Natuna has a
direct impact on increasing regional income and the welfare of fishermen,"
Zulkarnaen said in a recent statement to sukabumiNews.
While the project has
generally been well-received by the local government (Pemda), and most of the
operational support facilities have been built, the tender process for the
Ranai Fish Market construction has failed four times in 2025 alone, hampering
the overall progress of the program.
This situation is
exacerbated by the demolition of the old market without an adequate
replacement, causing vendors to experience a 50 percent drop in turnover.
Zulkarnaen believes that if the project is not realized this year, the
opportunity to manage the fish market will be delayed even further, given that
the land reclamation permit will soon expire.
In addition to
impacting the community's economy, the construction delay also threatens to
damage existing facilities due to lack of maintenance. This is considered
contrary to the Prabowo-Gibran government's vision, particularly points 3 (food
sovereignty) and 5 (strengthening the maritime and coastal economy).
It is important to
note that the project has actually received funding support from the Japan
International Cooperation Agency (JICA) through a grant to the Ministry of
Maritime Affairs and Fisheries (KKP), which is planned to be used to construct
the Ranai Fish Market and develop the Natuna SKPT as an integrated fisheries
center for western Indonesia. The community now hopes that the KKP will take
immediate concrete action. They do not want this significant opportunity and
potential to be completely lost.
